From 1942 to 1956, cinemagoers howled over the shenanigans of the hapless schmuck Joe McDoakes (played by George O'Hanlon) in a series of comedy one-reelers. Most of the Joe McDoakes films remain funny today. And they are now easily accessible for viewing.

The Joe McDoakes Comedies A Critical Filmography examines each of the sixty-three shorts in detail. This is the first book about this series. It discusses both the assets and the liabilities of these films. It should be noted that the films' assets are many while their liabilities are relatively few. Anyone interested in this comedy series will understand after reading why it was popular when first shown in cinemas and why it can still be appreciated by people today. This book includes brief biographies of the series' filmmaker Richard Bare and the series' star George O'Hanlon.
